Plan Of The British Settlement Of Singapore and Town plan of Singapore

The top half of this map, showing the island’s rivers and coastal points, was prepared by Captain James Franklin of the East India Company’s Quarter Master’s Department. The bottom half, showing the earliest town plan of Singapore, was drawn by Assistant Engineer Lieutenant Philip Jackson of the Bengal Artillery Regiment, the Surveyor in charge of planning the town. Jackson’s proposal reflected Sir Stamford Raffles’ desire for a more orderly settlement, with enclaves set aside for different ethnic communities.
