The Borneo Wharf and New Harbour

Situated in the Telok Blangah district, Borneo Wharf was one of the main wharves used by ships anchored at the busy New Harbour, which was renamed Keppel Harbour in 1900 after Admiral Sir Henry Keppel. The wharf was named after its owner, the Borneo Company, a commercial enterprise set up by Sir James Brooke in the mid 1850s for carrying out his business activities in the Borneo territories. The company’s Singapore branch grew to become one of the major shipping enterprises in the colony. Although the wharf was eventually bought over by the rival Tanjong Pagar Dock Company in 1885, it retained its original name.
