Postcard titled 'Entrance to New-harbour’

This postcard is stamped with a Penang stamp from 1914. It depicts New Harbour, now Keppel Harbour, named after Henry Keppel who arrived in Singapore in 1848 on the ship Maeander. While his ship was refitted in New Harbour, Keppel noted that ‘this ready-made harbor as a depot for coal would be invaluable. I had the position surveyed, and sent it, with my report, to the Board of Admiralty’. This harbor had previously been known as ‘Longyamen’ to the Chinese and the ‘Old Strait of Singapore’ to the European.
