This moulded pottery horse with a detachable head served as burial ware or ‘mingqi'. While remnants of a red slip are still visible, the black and white pigments that used to decorate the eyes, and a white bridle are barely noticeable. The practice of burying objects with the deceased stems from the belief in life after death.
