This is a document concerning the suit between Inche Barale, Inche Kalong, Inche Jameer, Inche Ismail, Lebby Kootchoot, Inche Yusup, Inche Rajah, Inche Awang, Inche Bujang, and Wan Duramar and Hadjee Hassan, the administrator for the estate of the deceased Inche Undah. It was issued on 25 October 1861 by the legal representative of Inche Kalong, David Aitken, who called for a rule to be served upon Henry William Harvetson. This document is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
