Description
Every family has a legend — and some legends helped build a nation.
History is not only found in textbooks or archives. Sometimes, it lives in the stories a grandfather told at the dinner table, in the quiet sacrifices made for a community, or in the values passed down through generations long after the person is gone.
My Grandfather’s Stories of Seah Eu Chin and Tan Seng Poh invites you to step into the past through the eyes of those who lived it. Author and speaker Shawn Seah, a direct descendant of Seah Eu Chin, shares intimate family stories and personal insights about the King of Gambier and Pepper, Seah Eu Chin, and prominent community leader Tan Seng Poh — two pioneering figures whose legacies helped shape the Singapore we know today. Blending memory with history, Shawn also traces their connections to streets in Tiong Bahru, such as Eu Chin Street, Seng Poh Road, and Seng Poh Lane, bringing their contributions and values to life in a way that feels close to home.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a curious neighbour, or simply someone who loves a good story, this talk welcomes everyone. Plus, stand a chance to win a commemorative book celebrating Tiong Bahru CC's 75th Anniversary.
This programme is presented by Tiong Bahru Community Centre, in conjunction with the National Heritage Board’s Heritage Activation Nodes and HAN@Tiong Bahru.
