Yale-NUS College’s graduation gown is the only graduation gown in Singapore to have a sash as of 2024. The sash, designed by Natalie Tan from the inaugural Class of 2017, has a batik-inspired print of the college’s mascot, Halcyon (a blue-eared kingfisher). The Yale-NUS College academic dress was first worn by the inaugural class of 2017 with this version of the sash. It includes elements of National University of Singapore (NUS) and Yale University, in their hood and sash colours respectively.Yale-NUS College was the first liberal arts college in Singapore and one of the only few in Asia. The college was set up at a time when schools in Asia were looking to move away from exam-dominated curricula and towards experiential, interdisciplinary learning. The college is known for its active student body and the collaborative spirit between the students and the college is evident through various official items such as this designed by students.
