The settee is part of a group of furniture which belonged to Edwin David Fernandez (1882–1934) and Margaret Augusta Klass (1896–1977). The family had the furniture on the verandah of their home, Edmar Villa. Located at 4 Tay Lian Teck Road, the house was built in 1931. The family was forced to vacate it by the Japanese army during the invasion of Singapore, and was able to return to it only after the war. English-style teakwood furniture was often produced locally in the Straits Settlements, where they were popular in the late 19th century to early 20th century.
