This pair of batik pants, featuring both machine and hand-stitching, are dyed in blue and red, creating a synthetic purple. Designed for trousers, this type of batik was popular among all social classes in the former Dutch East Indies during the 19th and early 20th centuries. While more affluent individuals chose batik tulis, others purchased more affordable cap versions or Dutch imitations. Europeans and Indo-Europeans typically wore these pants at home until the 1920s, when they were replaced by striped pajamas. The pants have a jeans-blue base with a booh at the trouser ends and side lines, and a leaf-and-flower motif on a white background.
