The machine-stitched sarong, unsigned but labeled ‘Margriet,’ features natural dyes in red and lighter orange-red. It includes a kepala and border in ‘Nitik’ or Jlamprang style, with a canting creating square dots, and a badan adorned with tiny hearts and a leaf border. The presence of craquelé suggests the sarong was completed without further dyeing. Popular in the early 20th century, the striped Nitik kepala reflects a trend towards simpler badan designs as sarongs became tighter-fitting. This batik exemplifies the high-quality craftsmanship from Pekalongan, dating between 1900-1920. It was likely worn by Louise Charlotte Hermiene Snel-Bastiaans or Godard Pierre Snel, who immigrated from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands in 1919.
