Gift of Evelyn Lim in memory of Lim Kam Peck and Oei Seng Neo

This is a framed studio photograph of Lim Kam Peck (c. 1896–1978) and her only daughter Oei Seng Neo (1923–2001). The backing card bears the studio mark “Wah Sang, Singapore (華生影相)”.Lim Kam Peck is seated on a chair, wearing baju panjang, sarong, beaded slippers and jewellery. Her baju panjang is fastened with three large brooches with a star design (kerosang bintang ) and she also wears hairpins, earrings, bracelets, and anklets. Oei Seng Neo stands beside her, leaning an arm on a side table and carrying a book in her other hand. The earliest photography studios were established in Singapore by Europeans in the 1840s and 1850s. Chinese and Japanese operated studios began appearing in increasing numbers in the 1890s, and by the early 20th century, these studios almost completely dominated the industry, not only in Singapore but across Southeast Asia.
