This shallow bowl is decorated at the centre with an image of a proclamation medal. The bowl is part of a set specially commissioned to celebrate the accession to the throne of the Catholic Spanish king, Charles IV, who was born in Naples in 1748 and became the King of Spain at the age of 40. The official proclamation of his crowning took place on 17 January 1789. At that time, Spain and Spanish controlled territories, including Mexico and the Philippines, celebrated new Spanish kings with special celebrations. The proclamation medal on this present plate was ordered by the city of Puebla de los Ángeles in Mexico. Puebla was the second most important city in Mexico after the capital, and held its commemoration celebration in 1790.
