The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.
The large size of this bowl makes it unique and it may have been made to suit Middle Eastern communal dining habits. Its lobed floral form was, however, widely seen among Tang Chinese ceramics and metalwork. Green-glazed stonewares from the Yue kilns were the premier ceramic products of southern China during the Tang period. Often these vessels were left undecorated to emphasise the beauty of their form and glaze, with the finest examples likened to jade.
