Jimmy Ong is an established Singapore artist, widely known for his works of charcoal on paper. This work will enable the museum to further research into his practice and on the development of drawing in Singapore art development.Born in Singapore in 1964, Jimmy Ong studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, USA from 1989-92 and in 1988 in Studio Art Centre International in Florence, Italy. He has exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions held in Singapore, Hong Kong and the USA since the 1980s.Widely recognised for his skills in the charcoal medium, Ong’s trademark remains his rendition of the nude. Fish Weight is based on the theme of loss, this artwork deals with the subject matter of a mourning of a loved one. Ong’s early works are often coloured by strong and expressive emotions, often drawn from personal experiences. His sensitivity to body language and depiction, in particular, leaves a deep and poignant impact on the viewer. This work features the strong use of chiaroscuro technique that is typical of his early works to complete the moody and evocative scene.
