The word 'chupu' comes from the word ‘chepu’, the Malay word for a covered vessel used for storing things. In Baba Malay, the word chupu, refers to this form and it came in various sizes. The chupu had a specific use in Peranakan wedding. It was used as a serving vessel, ‘tiam sim’, for special tonics that the bride would serve to her new husband.
