Gift of Madam Phan Wait Hong
Born in Shanghai, Phan Wait Hong is often regarded as Singapore’s most celebrated Beijing opera doyenne. Phan came to Singapore with a Chinese opera troupe in 1926, gradually establishing herself as a lead actress on the performing circuit. Over the years, she travelled frequently to perform in neighbouring countries. In 1993, Phan received the cultural medallion in recognition of her contributions to the opera performing scene. She is seen here (middle), in an undated photograph, with fellow members of her Chinese opera troupe.
