This sari is made from synthetic fabric. Synthetic fabrics were introduced in Singapore from the mid-1960s. Manufactured in Japan and later South Korea, these fabrics were usually made from nylon. Indian women accustomed to wearing cotton and silk saris took to these synthetic materials in a big way. Not only were they considered “modern”, outfits made from these fabrics were also easy to maintain and most do not require ironing. They were thus especially popular with working women.
