Born in 1931 in China, Chua Mia Tee migrated to Singapore in 1937. A graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1957, Chua is a highly regarded master of portrait painting. Chua has painted portraitures of prominent public figures, including presidents and prime ministers of Singapore. Besides portraitures, Chua also paints nationalistic and local scenes of Singapore, which serve as historical documentations of the nation’s changing landscape. This work shows Toa Payoh Garden before its redevelopment in the late 1990s. The garden was a popular local attraction with a distinctive 27-metre high viewing tower, and a carp pond lined with willow trees. The garden closed in 1999 to make way for a temporary bus interchange. It re-opened as a park in 2002 after a new bus interchange was completed at the nearby HBD hub.
