Born in 1959 in Singapore, Tung Yue Nang studied Chinese ink painting under master Shi Xiang Tuo. Best known for his photo-realist painting style Tung has exhibited since the late 1970s, receiving in 2002, from The Singapore Art Society, the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (Chinese Ink Painting category). In the naturalistic ‘The Sea – Pluralistic Universe’ and ‘The Sea – Within the Universe’ Tung has delicately painted shells, water droplets and a twig, anchored within the pictorial surface only be the merest shadow. These two illustrative works can be considered perhaps more decorative than complete narratives. However, as their titles imply, often simplicity can contain more than necessarily meets the eye. Tung harmoniously combines universal symbols and earthly elements within the composition in reference to philosophical texts, thus arriving at an expression of ideas rather than a still life.
