Born in 1936, Thomas Yeo graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1960. He then studied in Chelsea School of Art and Hammersmith College of Art and Architecture in London. Since then, Yeo has participated in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions and in 1984, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion. Although there is no hint of the subject matter in the title, the work is distinctively recognisable as a representation of landscape. Bands of brightly contrasting colour delineate what appear to be sky, hills, land and sea. Interestingly, the composition of Untitled is set along the vertical axis and the viewer’s eye is led to travel vertically, much like the composition of traditional Chinese landscape painting.
