Before rubber trees dominated most of the available agricultural land, tapioca was widely cultivated during the late 19th century. The crop was particularly popular among Chinese farmers and was one of the mainstays at Trafalgar Estate in Seletar, where some 400 hectares were dedicated to the cultivation of tapioca in 1880.
