Designed to make play accessible for people of all ages, this stool was inspired by the rattan rocking horses found in homes in Singapore during the 1960s and 1970s. It was constructed using the tendon and mortise joinery techniques from Ming dynasty furniture. The rattan weave inlet in the centre of the seat is an homage to Singapore’s material history and role as an entrepot for the rattan trade. Scene Shang was founded in 2014 by Jessica Wong and Pamela Ting; it closed in 2024. The brand produced contemporary Asian furniture and lifestyle products. They designed this stool for the International Furniture Fair Design Stars awards (Singapore) in 2016. It won the ASEAN Furniture Design Award in 2018.
