This photograph shows Quah Chin Siong, Danny, with his younger sister, posing in front of the house of his to-be wife Soh Beow Seng, Nancy, in Jalan Sentosa, 1970s. Quah Chin Siong (1946-2023) is the grandson of Quah Chin Lai (1892-1990), a metal and machinery hardware tycoon and philanthropist in early to mid-20th century Singapore. This image is part of a set of documents, including postcards and photographs, recording memories of the couple during their courtship, leading up to their wedding ceremony in 1975. Collectively, the items chronicle events in the relationship trajectory of a middle class couple in the 1970s, at the same time shining light into the family lives of one of Singapore’s early Chinese business trailblazers, Quah Chin Lai, and his descendant.
