This is a model of PetroRig I, a semi-submersible oil rig constructed in 2009 by the government-invested Sembcorp Marine, using Jurong Shipyard's proprietary technique for fast-track construction. Commencing operations in 1964, Jurong Shipyard was Singapore's first commercial facility responsible for the repair, construction and outfitting of ships for international trade, and enabled the country to establish itself as a major player in the shipping and shipbuilding industry. Later, the shipyard and Sembawang Shipyard became part of Sembcorp Marine, and expanded into rig building and offshore engineering in the 2000s with the aid of the Economic Development Board (EDB). In response to falling oil prices and the global shift towards more sustainable sources of energy, Sembcorp Marine merged with Keppel Offshore & Marine in 2023 to establish Seatrium, with a strategic focus on diversifying away from the oil and gas industry.
