This is a model of Galaxy III, a heavy-duty, harsh-weather jackup oil rig constructed in 1999 by Keppel FELS. Keppel FELS traces its origins to Keppel Shipyard, a wholly government-owned yard set up at the Sembawang naval base in 1968. With the aid of the Economic Development Board (EDB), Keppel initially focused on the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industry. Keppel expanded its operations in the 1970s to include the construction of offshore drilling rigs, specifically semi-submersibles and jackup rigs, in response to the growing demand in the offshore oil and gas industry. In response to falling oil prices and the global shift towards more sustainable sources of energy, Keppel exited the rig business in 2021 and merged with Sembcorp Marine in 2023 to establish Seatrium, with a strategic focus on diversifying away from the oil and gas industry.
