The Calcutta International Exhibition (1883-1884) was part of the world's fairs that became popular during the end of the 19th to early 20th century. It was held between 4 December 1883 and 10 March 1884, at the Indian Museum and the Maidan in Calcutta. Exhibitors included those from Australia, Ceylon, Belgium, Italy, Japan, USA, Turkey and the Straits Settlements including Singapore. The Exhibition was a ticketed event at Rs.1 per head, although there were certain designated days with discounted entry for non-European women and the underclass. Awards for different exhibitors were issued on the penultimate day. Among the recipients of a silver medal such as this one included W.E. Maxwell for his collections of Malay embroidered mats (tekat) and Malay weaponry.
