Prior to establishing the British trading settlement on Singapore in 1819, Raffles was Lieutenant Governor of Java, having been involved in the British expedition and conquest of Java in 1811. This silver medal was struck at the Calcutta Mint in 1814 and was presented by the British East India Company to Indian troops engaged in that capture of Java in 1811.
