Ronald Susilo defeated then world number one Lin Dan in the first round of the 2004 Athens Olympics men’s singles badminton event in straight sets and subsequently wore this autographed jersey in the quarter-finals of the 2004 Olympics. As of 2023, this is the furthest a Singaporean has progressed in the men’s singles badminton at the Summer Olympics and the feat earned Susilo the Singapore Sportsman of the Year title in 2005. Susilo presented the jersey from the quarter-finals as a gift to the donor David Tan in 2004, when the latter was the Director of Sports at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. Susilo also represented Singapore at the 2008 Olympics and has won various medals in international badminton competitions including the silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and 2007 SEA Games, and the gold medal at the 2003 Thailand Open, 2004 Japan Open and 2006 Bitburger Luxembourg Open.
