This letter verifies the employment status of Mr Pereira, the bearer of this note. Written by a colleague from the General Electric Company, the letter also mentions Mr Pereira’s training stint in the United Kingdom, where he had been sent by his employer, the Oriental Telephone & Electric Company (OTEC), which operated Singapore’s public telephone network when it first opened in 1882. Mr Pereira had joined OTEC as a junior technician in 1945, rising through the ranks before eventually retiring as an engineer in 1987, when the company was known as Telecoms.
