This letter verifies the employment status of Mr Pereira, the bearer of this note. Written by the General Manager of the Oriental Telephone & Electric Company (OTEC), which operated Singapore’s public telephone network when it first opened in 1882, the letter also mentions Mr Pereira’s upcoming training stint England. Mr Pereira had joined OTEC as a junior technician in 1945, rising through the ranks before eventually retiring as an engineer in 1987, when the company was known as Telecoms.
