This is a baju Melayu in the Telok Blangah style — a gusset cut top with a rounded collar for males and is usually associated with the modern Johor sultanate of the late 19th century. This baju features the jalur menegak (vertical stripes) motif, most associated with the late 1910s to 1930s when it became popular amongst tenun (woven fabrics) weavers and their consumers. The baju Melayu is flexible and can be worn for everyday wear and formal and festive occasions. The primary differentiation in degrees of formality tends to be found in the type of tenun and fabric used, through which one also projects their social class. The aesthetics of this baju are most closely associated with the clothing worn, particularly by higher social classes of the Riau Islands and states on the Malay Peninsula like Pahang and Johor.
