The post-independence era was a key period for the development of local educational resources that would ground students in the heritage of Singapore and promote a growing sense of nationhood amongst its populace. “The Pioneering Years” was the first of a series of four history textbooks for Singaporean Primary Schools in the 1970s, which presented the country’s history from a more local perspective. The book focus on important personalities of Singapore, who are presented as a broadly chronological series of stories. It ends off with a chapter titled “A bus-tour of our city” which imaginatively brings readers on a bus tour to different landmarks and significant roads around the city centre.
