The “Singapore Icons” collection was launched in 2013 by Supermama, a design and lifestyle goods brand founded by Singaporean couple, Edwin Low and Lee Mei Ling, in 2010. The collection was driven by the bid to explore the possibility of identifying new Singapore icons. The inaugural collection featured five sets of porcelain based on different themes that were produced in collaboration with five local designers/design studios. The HDB set, designed by Chang Shian Wei, depicts three different exterior views of Housing Development Board flats, which most Singaporeans would be familiar with. The two dishes feature the common corridors and a facade of kitchen windows, while the chopsticks stand shows a close-up of a window at night. Potted plants serve as a unifying motif in all three ceramics, imbuing each piece with a sense of life.Created together with the Japanese ceramic company Kihara Inc, the porcelain wares were made in Arita, Japan, and sport stamp-printed designs in underglaze cobalt-blue pigments. The “Singapore Icons” collection has been very well-received since its launch and won the President’s Design Award, Singapore, in 2013.
