“Abraham’s Promise” is ostensibly a novel about an old Ceylon Tamil teacher of Latin looking back at his life, including his early political involvement in 1950s-60s Singapore, marriage and poor relationship with his son. Considering his past, Abraham is led from the promise of youth, through cynicism, to an understanding and reconciliation of his life and times hard-won in maturity. The book could also be read as a political allegory of Singapore. The writer, Justice Philip Jeyaretnam, is the son of politician Joshua Benjamin (JB) Jeyaretnam and Margaret Walker. He is of Sri Lankan Tamil and English descent. He became the President of the Singapore International Commercial Court in 2023. He was appointed Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court in 2021 and High Court Judge also in 2021. In 2022, he was appointed by the Chief Justice as the co-chair of the Commercial Practice Panel of the Supreme Court, to develop best practices for the management of commercial cases.Jeyaretnam’s book “First Loves” (1987) topped the Sunday Times bestseller list for 18 months, selling over 100,000 copies, while his next book “Raffles Place Ragtime” (1988) was nominated for the Commonwealth Writers Prize. He received the NAC Young Artist of the Year Award for his literary work in 1993 and a SEA Write Award in 2003.
