The Sony Walkman was a portable cassette player produced from 1979. It was popular in Singapore and globally as a lifestyle product that allowed individuals to listen to music on the go using headphones. It provided more personal freedom and privacy when listening to music as compared to previously, when people listened primarily through home hi-fi systems or in public settings. This Sports Walkman (WM-F63) was released in the 1980s and included a FM/AM radio. As part of the Sports range, it had a durable and splash-proof casing. It also featured Dolby noise reduction and an auto reverse cassette mechanism, which allowed users to play both sides of the tape without turning it. The donor Ryan Lim’s uncle gave him the Sports Walkman as a reward for completing his Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in the mid-1980s. Through the Walkman, the donor was introduced to listening to music over the radio.
