On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra, triggering several tsunamis which killed at least at least 225,000 people across several countries. As part of the Singapore Armed Forces' largest-ever humanitarian relief effort, SAF personnel were deployed to affected areas in Indonesia and Thailand. The SAF Tsunami Relief Operation 2004 Medal was awarded to personnel involved in tsunami relief operations between 26th December 2004 and 25th February 2005. This particular medal was awarded to 3SG Chow Chung Ping of 35th Battalion, Singapore Combat Engineers.
