On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra, triggering several tsunamis which killed at least at least 225,000 people across several countries. As part of the Singapore Armed Forces' largest-ever humanitarian relief effort, SAF personnel were deployed to affected areas in Indonesia and Thailand. This armband with the Singapore flag was worn by an SAF soldier engaged in relief efforts in Meulaboh in Indonesia.
