Portrait of Mr Choong Ewe Leong

This is a portrait of David Choong Ewe Leong (1929 – 2011), a badminton player who represented the Malayan team in various international tournaments. He married Doreen Tan Kien Leng (1939 – 2014) on 1 January 1966. The style of this portrait is modelled after the ancestral portraits of Ewe Leong’s paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Choong Lye Hock. The wooden frame and reverse glass painting border have been faithfully replicated. Eng Hye’s paternal great grandfather, the Choong family’s patriarch, Choong Cheng Kean, immigrated from China in the 18th century and established the family’s network which spanned Xiamen, Phuket, Kedah, and Penang.
