This is a bill of exchange for London Joint City & Midbank Limited to pay to The Mercantile Bank of India. The bill of exchange was issued by Tan Kah Kee and Co. to account for the purchase of 780g of rubber that was to be transported via the cargo vessel Koyo Maru. Tan Kah Kee and Co. was established in 1919 specialising in the manufacturing of rubber products. The letter was signed by Lee Kong Chian. Lee Kong Chian was a prominent Chinese businessman and philanthropist, as well as Tan Kah Kee’s protege and son-in-law. He worked for Tan Kah Kee since 1915 and oversees the expansion of Tan’s rubber export business into Europe and America.
