Workers overseeing the casting of giant caissons the size of a 10-storey apartment block at Tuas, Singapore’s westernmost area where a new container port terminal is being built on partially reclaimed land. Known as the Tuas Mega Port project, the port will be built on partially reclaimed land and it will become the largest container terminal in the world when it is completed in the 2040s. Land-scarce Singapore has had a long history of land reclamation, one that can be traced back to the 19th century. This photograph is from Singaporean photographer Sim Chi Yin’s Shifting Sands series, which documents the role sand plays in land reclamation and the impact it has on the social, environmental and political landscapes in Singapore and the region today.
