Sand mountain behind hoarding, at an industrial waste dump site near Lim Chu Kang in northwestern Singapore. Stockpiles of sand such as this can be spotted in some parts of Singapore, which are used for land reclamation works. Land-scarce Singapore has had a long history of land reclamation, one that can be traced back to the 19th century. This photograph is from Singaporean photographer Sim Chi Yin’s Shifting Sands series, which documents the role sand plays in land reclamation and the impact it has on the social, environmental and political landscapes in Singapore and the region today.
