This letter opener bearing the name and seal of the United States Senate was used by former Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew for many years and was stored in the stationery tray drawer of his office work desk. It is likely to be a gift from the US Senate, and bears witness to Mr Lee's visits to the USA throughout his years in office and strong diplomatic ties between Singapore and USA. Most memorably in 1985, Mr Lee was accorded the rare honour of addressing both houses of the Congress - the Senate and House of Representatives.
