This unusual segment of tiles was originally part of the tomb structure that was built as a decorative feature around the headstone. But this section broke off over time due to the two trees that grew on top of this grave. The curved structure shows how the tiles were aligned and specially cut into shape. The headstone indicates that this should have been a joint grave of a husband and wife. However, the English inscription on the front of the offering table indicates that only Mdm Cher Sye Eng, who died on 2 August 1933, was interred there. Mdm Cher's grave was one of over 3,700 graves that were exhumed between 2013 and 2014 for the construction of a new road through Bukit Brown Cemetery. The soft colours and elegant pairing of square and rectangular art nouveau tiles enhanced the visual appeal of the tomb, while revealing the aesthetic preferences of the deceased and her family.
