Long hair is secured in a bun with the use of hairpins. Hairpins with arrowhead points were documented in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the 18th century and popular throughout Southeast Asia till the 20th century. By the 1930s, the use of hairpins gradually phased out as long locks were cut to suit the prevailing fashion of shorter hairstyles.
