This set of three Chinese readers were targeted at young children and feature illustrations with its corresponding Chinese terms in traditional Chinese characters and zhuyin(注音) pronunciation.Zhuyin or Mandarin Phonetic symbols were introduced by the Chinese Republican government in the 1910s and is still widely used in Taiwan today. The Chinese community in Singapore also used this system until hanyu pinyin was introduced to schools in Singapore in the early 1980s.In 1958, the Malayan Singapore government banned imports of books from China. Most of the post-war textbooks used in Singapore were written in Singapore but printed in Hong Kong.
