Published by Shanghai Book Company, this Chinese textbook was tailored specially for English medium school students in Singapore. Chinese textbooks for English schools were published separately and had a curriculum that was simpler than that of Chinese-medium schools.Enrollment in Chinese-medium schools fell drastically in the post-independence period as more and more Chinese parents decided to send their children to English school due to better job prospects.
