Published by Shanghai Book Company, this Chinese textbook was tailored specially for English medium school students in Singapore. Chinese textbooks for English schools were published separately and had a curriculum that was simpler than that of Chinese-medium schools.Enrollment in Chinese-medium schools fell drastically in the post-independence period as more and more Chinese parents decided to send their children to English school due to better job prospects. Established in 1925, Shanghai Book Company was one of the oldest Chinese bookstores in Singapore. After World War II, the company published books in Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil.
