This memorial portrait by Low Kway Song depicts Chia Ann Siang (1834-1892), a wealthy Malacca-born merchant and landowner. He was the son of Chia Poh Eng, one of the founding members of the Keng Teck Whay Association, a self-help organisation established in 1831 by a group of 36 Hokkien Peranakan merchants from Malacca. Chia Ann Siang joined trading company Boustead & Co. in 1848 and was promoted to chief produce storekeeper after 6 years. After Chia’s death, he was buried in a private burial ground adjoining the Hokkien Cemetery at Bukit Timah Road.
