This striking satin damask panel is embroidered on both sides with a five-clawed dragon amid stylised clouds and other auspicious motifs. The dragon, a symbol of imperial authority, is magnificently embroidered in gold-wrapped threads while the other motifs are worked in coloured silk threads. The latter include bats carrying swastikas, which signify boundless happiness or manifold blessings, and the Eight Buddhist Emblems (endless knot, conch shell, lotus, double fish, standard of victory, vase, canopy, and wheel). The dragon appears fixated on a flaming pearl, which embodies wisdom and enlightenment. Based on the large size and orientation of the design, this textile was most likely used as a curtain or a decorative hanging in the palace or a temple that enjoyed imperial patronage.
