This bowl is freely painted on the exterior with underglaze cobalt-blue floral scrolls set against a white background, while the interior is decorated with stylised lotus plants reserved against a sea of blue. Such bowls, produced at the popular kilns (minyao 民窑) in Jingdezhen, were among the types of ceramics cargo carried by European ships in the late Ming dynasty. Similar bowls have been recovered from the wrecks of the Witte Leeuw (a Dutch East Indian Company ship which foundered in 1613) and the San Diego, a Spanish vessel that sank in 1600.
