The decoration on this tea bowl consists of floral sprays and blue pinwheels or whorls within petal-shaped panels, painted in the Imari colour palette. This tea bowl highlights the hybrid quality of many 18th century porcelain wares available in Europe. Produced for a European clientele, this tea bowl with a Japanese-inspired design was probably made by Chinese craftsmen. Such pieces were generally cheaper than purely Japanese wares.
